Preparedness for Power Outages

Power Outages

Power outages happen unexpectedly and can happen for many reasons, including severe weather and infrastructure failure. Outages can disrupt water, communications, and transportation and can close businesses such as banks, ATMs, gas stations, and grocery stores.

Residents are encouraged to plan for emergency situations and identify places that they can temporarily relocate to.

Please DO NOT call the police or fire departments to report power outages.  Only call 9-1-1 for true life-threatening emergencies.  Call RI Energy at 1-855-743-1102 or visit their web site listed below.

Preparing for a power outage

  • Have a battery-powered AM/FM radio
  • Have a flashlight with extra batteries
  • Charge electrical devices, including an external cell phone battery
  • Preserve cell phone battery life

Downed power lines

  • Never touch or move a downed power line or touch any trees in contact with wires.  They could be energized!
  • Downed power lines should be reported to Rhode Island Energy by calling 1-855-743-1102.
  • Double reporting helps guarantee storm recovery efficiency and the safety of all crews involved so if you aren’t sure it was reported, call RI Energy anyway.
